How to Pay Contractors and Freelancers in Cameroon with Stablecoins

How to Pay Contractors and Freelancers in Cameroon with Stablecoins

Paying remote talent in Cameroon should not require a correspondent banking chain. If your finance team is trying to pay contractors Cameroon based, the delay usually sits in the payout leg, not in the approval. Stablecoins give you a settlement asset that moves fast and converts to local currency before it reaches the recipient.

Cameroon is a market where that matters. The country received about CFA650 billion in remittances in 2025, according to the Director General of the Treasury. Mobile money already carries a large share of domestic and diaspora flows.

This guide explains how payouts to contractors in Cameroon work. It also shows how Yativo settles them with USDC or fiat on the front end and XAF on the back end.

Why Companies Work with Contractors and Freelancers in Cameroon

Cameroon combines a large domestic mobile money market with a steady inflow of cross-border money. The wallet numbers are the clearest indicator.

Cameroon held 65.1% of all CEMAC mobile money accounts in 2024, according to BEAC data reported by Investir au Cameroun. ART and the operators counted 11.43 million active mobile money accounts in Cameroon in 2024, covering 38.84% of MTN and Orange subscribers.

Regional usage is growing too. CEMAC mobile money transaction value reached about CFA34.8 trillion in 2024, up 20.33%, according to BEAC. A contractor in Cameroon can be paid into a mobile money account.

How Payouts to Contractors in Cameroon Work

Payouts arrive in XAF, in a bank account or a mobile money account. Many contractors provide a mobile money number rather than a bank account.

Bank accounts

A licensed local payout partner handles the domestic leg, so the recipient receives a normal local credit.

Mobile money

With 11.43 million active accounts in 2024, wallets are often the destination. Participants can move money between mobile wallets and bank accounts inside the region.

The identifiers you need

Collect the full name as it appears on the account, the mobile money number with the correct operator prefix, and the bank account number where relevant. Errors at this stage can cause failed payouts. Store the details and reuse them.

For a deeper look at the local leg, see our guide to Cameroon bank and mobile money payouts.

The Challenges When You Pay Contractors in Cameroon from Abroad

Cross-border cost eats into small invoices. Sending small amounts across borders costs an average of 6.36% of the amount sent, according to the World Bank. On a modest monthly invoice, that is a real cost on the amount sent.

Wire timing does not match freelance rhythms. A correspondent banking route adds handling steps.

Wallet-first recipients. Many contractors provide a mobile money number rather than a bank account number. A payment process built only for bank transfers may not fit every contractor.

Diaspora flows already favor wallets. BEAC reported that more than CFA1.354 trillion was sent directly to Mobile Money accounts across CEMAC in 2024.

How to Send Stablecoin Payouts to Cameroon with Yativo

Option 1: Dashboard (for manual payouts)

  1. Fund your Yativo float balance with either a fiat or a stablecoin deposit, such as USDC.
  2. Go to Transfer in your Yativo dashboard.
  3. Select the float wallet you are paying with, for example USD, EUR, MXN or whichever balance you funded.
  4. Choose the customer you are paying on behalf of. This step is necessary for fintechs that run payouts on behalf of their customers.
  5. Choose Cameroon as the destination and Local Payout as the payout method.
  6. Enter the recipient details the payout form asks for, such as the holder’s name, ID, bank account or mobile money number and network.
  7. Enter the amount in USD or XAF.
  8. Review the quote: exchange rate, fees, delivery time and the exact XAF amount your recipient receives.
  9. Confirm with your PIN and 2FA.
  10. Track the payout in real time and download the receipt for your records.

Option 2: API (for automated and bulk payouts)

Every endpoint below is in the Yativo API documentation. Production calls go to https://api.yativo.com/api/v1, and the sandbox runs at https://smtp.yativo.com/api/v1.

Authenticate every request with the X-Api-Key and X-Api-Secret headers. Each key only works from the server IPs listed on it. These keys replaced bearer tokens, as covered in our October update. Every POST also needs a unique Idempotency-Key header.

Step 1. Generate a USDC deposit address on Solana to fund your balance:

POST https://api.yativo.com/api/v1/crypto/create-wallet
X-Api-Key: $YATIVO_API_KEY
X-Api-Secret: $YATIVO_API_SECRET
Idempotency-Key: 6a9ca447-1a2c-570a-a78e-4841648838e4
Content-Type: application/json

{
  "currency": "USDC_SOL"
}

Step 2. List the payout methods available for Cameroon:

curl "https://api.yativo.com/api/v1/payment-methods/payout?country=CMR" \
  -H "X-Api-Key: $YATIVO_API_KEY" \
  -H "X-Api-Secret: $YATIVO_API_SECRET" \
  -H "Accept: application/json"

In this example, Local Payout carries gateway ID 1258. Always read the ID from the live response instead of hardcoding it.

Step 3. Fetch the required fields for that gateway:

GET https://api.yativo.com/api/v1/beneficiary/form/show/1258
X-Api-Key: $YATIVO_API_KEY
X-Api-Secret: $YATIVO_API_SECRET

The response lists every required field and its accepted values. Build your payment_data object from it. For field details, see API documentation.

Step 4. Create the beneficiary. Replace the placeholder with the fields the form returned:

POST https://api.yativo.com/api/v1/beneficiaries/payment-methods/
X-Api-Key: $YATIVO_API_KEY
X-Api-Secret: $YATIVO_API_SECRET
Idempotency-Key: 37798c61-e6e3-5777-b48b-0fc2903814a4
Content-Type: application/json

{
  "gateway_id": 1258,
  "nickname": "Douala logistics firm",
  "currency": "XAF",
  "customer_id": "e8caa491-57b6-4c39-9e3a-d2c97e47fbf0",
  "payment_data": {
    "{field_from_form}": "{value}"
  }
}

Step 5. Lock your XAF rate. Quotes hold for 5 minutes:

POST https://api.yativo.com/api/v1/exchange-rate
X-Api-Key: $YATIVO_API_KEY
X-Api-Secret: $YATIVO_API_SECRET
Idempotency-Key: bd21b95b-11fc-582e-b909-c71ead17b121
Content-Type: application/json

{
  "from_currency": "USD",
  "to_currency": "XAF",
  "method_id": 1258,
  "method_type": "payout",
  "amount": 400
}

Step 6. Initiate the payout from your balance:

POST https://api.yativo.com/api/v1/wallet/payout
X-Api-Key: $YATIVO_API_KEY
X-Api-Secret: $YATIVO_API_SECRET
Idempotency-Key: f3a39fff-14e4-5cbe-ac7e-933d2cd8de1c
Content-Type: application/json

{
  "debit_wallet": "USD",
  "amount": 400,
  "payment_method_id": 48337,
  "customer_id": "e8caa491-57b6-4c39-9e3a-d2c97e47fbf0",
  "quote_id": "4a72ecf8-6c8a-4e38-9971-8aabe9f785ed"
}

Use the id from the beneficiary response as payment_method_id. For bulk runs, repeat the call per beneficiary, as described on our payouts page.

Best Practices for Paying Contractors in Cameroon

Collect identifiers at onboarding. Ask for the mobile money number, the operator, and the account name in one intake form. Collect the details before the first payment.

Agree on the payout currency in the contract. State clearly that payment is made in XAF unless both sides agree otherwise.

Batch on a fixed schedule. Group payments into a weekly or twice-monthly run instead of sending ad hoc transfers.

Quote before confirming. Always review the XAF amount and the rate before you commit a batch. A quote gives you a number to approve internally.

Keep reconciliation records. Store the quote, the payout reference, the rail used and the recipient identifier for every payment.

Classification and tax duties stay with you. How you classify a contractor and what you withhold or report are decisions for your company and its advisors. Yativo moves money. It does not determine employment status or tax treatment. Confirm your position with your advisors.
