How to Process Local Payouts to Portugal (EUR) via SEPA Using Stablecoins

SEPA payouts to Portugal in EUR funded by USDC or EURC: 323.8 million SEPA instant transfers in Portugal in 2025, payouts that settle in under 30 minutes, IBAN delivery

Your Lisbon contractor sent the invoice on Monday. By Thursday, your bank wire is still somewhere between a correspondent bank and a compliance queue. Your contractor is asking whether the money was really sent.

SEPA payouts to Portugal with stablecoin funding remove that wait. You fund in USDC or EURC, confirm a quote, and a licensed local payout partner credits euros to the recipient’s Portuguese IBAN in under 30 minutes.

Portugal already lives on fast euro transfers. The country’s clearing system processed 323.8 million SEPA instant transfers in 2025, about 17 times the 2024 figure, according to Banco de Portugal. Your recipients expect that speed from you too.

This guide explains why paying Portugal from outside Europe is still slow, how the stablecoin-funded SEPA flow works, and which recipient details you need. It then walks through your first payout by dashboard and by API.

Why SEPA Payouts to Portugal Are Harder Than They Should Be

Inside the euro area, moving money is cheap and quick. The pain starts when your money sits outside it, in dollars, pesos or a stablecoin balance.

The wire still goes through correspondents. A USD wire to Portugal usually converts to EUR somewhere along a chain of banks. Each hop can add a fee, a day and a deduction you only see on arrival.

Your recipient’s expectations moved on. In the fourth quarter of 2025, instant transfers made up 70% of all credit transfers in Portugal, more than double the EU average of 33.7%. A three-day wire now looks broken by comparison.

Name checks are stricter. Under the EU Instant Payments Regulation, euro area banks must check that the payee name matches the IBAN. Loose or abbreviated names now cause warnings and returns.

FX spreads hide in the receipt. When the conversion happens at a correspondent, you often learn the exact euro amount only after the recipient complains. That makes reconciliation painful.

How SEPA Payouts to Portugal with Stablecoin Funding Work

Yativo is payment infrastructure, not a bank. We use stablecoins as the settlement layer between your balance and the euro area. A licensed local payout partner then makes the SEPA credit to the Portuguese bank account.

  1. You fund your Yativo float balance with a fiat deposit or a stablecoin such as USDC or EURC.
  2. Yativo converts the payout value to a stablecoin and settles it on-chain.
  3. A licensed local payout partner in Europe receives the stablecoin settlement.
  4. The partner converts it to euros and sends a SEPA credit transfer to the recipient’s IBAN.
  5. Your recipient receives EUR in their normal Portuguese bank account.

Your supplier does not need a crypto wallet. They never see or touch stablecoins. On their side, the payment looks like a standard SEPA credit from a European account.

The rail itself is mature. The euro area processed 17.8 billion credit transfers in the second half of 2025, worth €108.9 trillion, according to the ECB. For more on the settlement layer, read how to receive international payments in stablecoins.

Supported Payout Rails for Portugal

Yativo shows every active method for Portugal through the payout methods endpoint. These are the options for EUR and USD today.

Bank SEPA (PT): featured

This is the main SEPA rail for euro payouts to Portuguese bank accounts. It carries gateway ID 1226 and delivers EUR to any Portuguese IBAN.

Required details: account holder name and Portuguese IBAN. The form may also ask for a BIC or address. For the exact list, see API documentation.

Settlement time: under 30 minutes.

Best for: supplier invoices, contractor payments, payroll top-ups and marketplace seller payouts.

POBO (Local) EUR

POBO (Local), gateway ID 1094, pays euros locally on behalf of your business. It settles next business day (T+1), so use it when a payment on behalf of your company matters more than speed.

Best for: scheduled payments where T+1 is acceptable.

SWIFT options

SWIFT in USD, gateway ID 695, remains available when the recipient explicitly wants dollars in a Portuguese account. SWIFT (POBO) in EUR, gateway ID 1146, also appears for some accounts. SWIFT and SWIFT (POBO) settle in T+1 / next business day.

Paying across the border too? Our guide to SEPA payouts to Spain covers the same rail for Spanish IBANs.

Related euro corridors use the same playbook. See our France SEPA guide and Germany SEPA guide.

Recipient Details to Collect Before Your First Portugal Payout

The payout form for gateway 1226 is the authoritative field list. Our public API documentation does not publish that form yet, so read it from your dashboard or from the form endpoint below.

  • Account holder name: the full legal name exactly as the bank account shows it. This matters for Verification of Payee.
  • IBAN: Portuguese IBANs start with PT50 and have 25 characters. Ask for it from the recipient’s banking app, not retyped by hand.
  • BIC/SWIFT code: if the form asks for it.
  • Address and holder type: individual or company, when the form requires them.

Ask your recipient for a screenshot or PDF of their bank details during onboarding. It removes most typing errors before the first payout.

How to Send SEPA Payouts to Portugal via Yativo

Option 1: Dashboard (for manual payouts)

  1. Fund your Yativo float balance with either a fiat or a stablecoin deposit, such as USDC or EURC.
  2. Go to Transfer in your Yativo dashboard.
  3. Select the float wallet you are paying with, for example USD, EUR, MXN or whichever balance you funded.
  4. Choose the customer you are paying on behalf of. This step is necessary for fintechs that run payouts on behalf of their customers.
  5. Choose Portugal as the destination country and the Bank SEPA (PT) payout method.
  6. Enter the recipient details the form asks for, such as the account holder name and the Portuguese IBAN.
  7. Enter the amount in USD or EUR.
  8. Review the quote: exchange rate, fees, delivery time and the exact EUR amount your recipient receives.
  9. Confirm with your PIN and 2FA.
  10. Track the payout in real time and download the receipt for your records.

Option 2: API (for automated and bulk payouts)

Every endpoint below is in the Yativo API documentation. Production calls go to https://api.yativo.com/api/v1, and the sandbox runs at https://smtp.yativo.com/api/v1.

Authenticate every request with the X-Api-Key and X-Api-Secret headers. Each key only works from the server IPs listed on it. These API keys replaced bearer tokens, as covered in our October update. Every POST request also needs a unique Idempotency-Key header.

Step 1. Generate a USDC funding address on Solana to top up your balance:

POST https://api.yativo.com/api/v1/crypto/create-wallet
X-Api-Key: $YATIVO_API_KEY
X-Api-Secret: $YATIVO_API_SECRET
Idempotency-Key: 3f1a9c20-7b44-4e1d-9a61-0c5e2b8d4801
Content-Type: application/json

{
  "currency": "USDC_SOL"
}

Step 2. List the payout methods available for Portugal:

curl "https://api.yativo.com/api/v1/payment-methods/payout?country=PRT" \
  -H "X-Api-Key: $YATIVO_API_KEY" \
  -H "X-Api-Secret: $YATIVO_API_SECRET" \
  -H "Accept: application/json"

Bank SEPA (PT) is active and carries gateway ID 1226. Always read the ID from the live response instead of hardcoding it.

Step 3. Fetch the required fields for that gateway:

GET https://api.yativo.com/api/v1/beneficiary/form/show/1226
X-Api-Key: $YATIVO_API_KEY
X-Api-Secret: $YATIVO_API_SECRET

The response lists every required field and the accepted values for each one. Build your payment_data object from it. For field details, see API documentation.

Step 4. Create the beneficiary. Replace the placeholder with the fields the form returned:

POST https://api.yativo.com/api/v1/beneficiaries/payment-methods/
X-Api-Key: $YATIVO_API_KEY
X-Api-Secret: $YATIVO_API_SECRET
Idempotency-Key: 4a2b0d31-8c55-4f2e-ab72-1d6f3c9e5902
Content-Type: application/json

{
  "gateway_id": 1226,
  "nickname": "Lisbon Design Studio",
  "currency": "EUR",
  "customer_id": "e8caa491-57b6-4c39-9e3a-d2c97e47fbf0",
  "payment_data": {
    "{field_from_form}": "{value}"
  }
}

Step 5. Optionally, lock your rate. Quotes hold for 5 minutes:

POST https://api.yativo.com/api/v1/exchange-rate
X-Api-Key: $YATIVO_API_KEY
X-Api-Secret: $YATIVO_API_SECRET
Idempotency-Key: 5b3c1e42-9d66-4a3f-bc83-2e7a4d0f6a03
Content-Type: application/json

{
  "from_currency": "USD",
  "to_currency": "EUR",
  "method_id": 1226,
  "method_type": "payout",
  "amount": 2500
}

Step 6. Initiate the payout from your balance:

POST https://api.yativo.com/api/v1/wallet/payout
X-Api-Key: $YATIVO_API_KEY
X-Api-Secret: $YATIVO_API_SECRET
Idempotency-Key: 6c4d2f53-ae77-4b4a-cd94-3f8b5e1a7b04
Content-Type: application/json

{
  "debit_wallet": "USD",
  "amount": 2500,
  "payment_method_id": 9481,
  "customer_id": "e8caa491-57b6-4c39-9e3a-d2c97e47fbf0",
  "quote_id": "4a72ecf8-6c8a-4e38-9971-8aabe9f785ed"
}

Use the id from the beneficiary response as payment_method_id. Leave out quote_id if you did not lock a rate. For bulk runs, repeat the call per beneficiary, as described on our payouts page.

Best Practices for SEPA Payouts to Portugal

Match the name to the IBAN. Verification of Payee compares the two. Use the exact legal name from the bank account, including company suffixes like Lda or S.A.

Validate the IBAN before you save it. A Portuguese IBAN always starts with PT50 and runs 25 characters. Reject anything else at onboarding, not at payout time.

Pick the rail by deadline. Use Bank SEPA (PT) when the money must land today. Use POBO (Local) when T+1 is fine and the payment should go on behalf of your company.

Lock the rate on large invoices. Quotes hold for 5 minutes. Locking one tells you the exact euro amount before you confirm, which keeps reconciliation clean.

Save beneficiaries once and reuse them. Recurring contractor and supplier payouts get faster and safer when the IBAN is stored and checked once.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my supplier in Portugal need a crypto wallet?

No. Your supplier receives euros in their normal Portuguese bank account over SEPA. They never see or touch stablecoins. On their statement, the payment looks like any other euro credit transfer.

Is this legal and compliant?

Yes. Yativo is registered with FinCEN as a Money Services Business, registration number 31000270723339. A licensed local payout partner delivers the euro credit inside SEPA. Your own tax, invoicing and reporting duties in your country still apply.

How long does a SEPA payout to Portugal take?

Featured SEPA payouts to Portugal through Bank SEPA (PT), gateway ID 1226, settle in under 30 minutes. If you choose the POBO (Local) method, gateway ID 1094, delivery is next business day (T+1). Your quote always shows the delivery time before you confirm.

What details do I need from my recipient?

At minimum, the account holder name and a Portuguese IBAN, which starts with PT50 and has 25 characters. Some forms also ask for a BIC or an address. Read the exact list from the payout form, or see API documentation.

Can I fund in EURC instead of USDC?

Yes, if your account supports it. You can fund your float with a fiat deposit or a stablecoin such as USDC or EURC. The recipient still gets euros in their bank account either way.

Why did the payout fail the name check?

Since 9 October 2025, euro area banks must offer Verification of Payee before a transfer. A mismatch between the name and the IBAN can trigger a warning or a return. Use the legal name exactly as the bank account shows it.
