SPEI Payouts Explained: How Businesses Pay Out via SPEI with Stablecoins

SPEI Payouts Explained: How Businesses Pay Out via SPEI with Stablecoins

Paying suppliers, contractors and staff in Mexico used to mean holding pesos in a local account or wiring dollars and waiting. A spei payouts stablecoin model changes that: you hold digital dollars, and your recipients get pesos. The scale behind that shift is hard to ignore, with 7,308.1 million SPEI transfers in 2025, worth 591.8 trillion pesos.

For treasury and product teams, the appeal is operational. You keep working capital in a stable unit and settle to local rails on demand. No idle peso balances sitting in a bank you rarely touch.

This guide covers what SPEI is, how it moves money, why funding it from abroad is awkward, and how Yativo handles the payout leg with stablecoin funding.

What Is SPEI?

SPEI is Mexico’s interbank electronic payment system. Banco de México, the country’s central bank, runs it and operates 24/7 as a real-time settlement system. It is the backbone for peso transfers between banks.

It is not a niche rail. Banco de México reports 7,308.1 million SPEI transfers in 2025, worth 591.8 trillion pesos. That volume covers payroll, supplier invoices, consumer purchases and person-to-person transfers.

Who Uses SPEI

The user base is broad and mainstream:

  • Employers paying salaries and expense reimbursements
  • Businesses settling supplier and contractor invoices
  • Marketplaces and platforms paying sellers in pesos
  • Individuals moving money between their own accounts
  • Remittance corridors, where Mexico received US$61.79 billion in remittances in 2025, with 99.1% arriving as electronic transfers

That last point matters for payout design. Your Mexican recipients already expect pesos to land in seconds, because the rail they use every day does exactly that.

How SPEI Works

SPEI is an account-to-account push system. A sending institution debits the payer and instructs the rail to credit the payee’s account at another institution.

Identifiers: CLABE, Card or Phone

You do not need a full bank account number. SPEI itself accepts a CLABE, a 16-digit debit card or a 10-digit phone number linked to an account, according to Banco de México. The CLABE is an 18-digit standardized account key and remains the most common choice for business payouts.

Collect the identifier carefully. A wrong digit sends funds to the wrong account, and recovery depends on the receiving bank’s cooperation.

Timing

On the local leg, Banco de México says a SPEI transfer should not take more than 30 seconds once the sending bank approves it. The rail operates 24/7.

Real-world timing also depends on the sending side, such as approval queues and internal review.

What the Recipient Needs

The recipient needs an account at a Mexican institution and a valid identifier. They do not need to install anything or open a new wallet. In a stablecoin-funded flow, the recipient never needs a crypto wallet and receives a normal local credit in pesos.

Proof of Payment: The CEP

Banco de México issues a CEP within 30 minutes of the deposit, and you can look it up for 45 working days.

Your recipient can look it up on the CEP site with the date, amount, banks and tracking key. Treat the CEP as your settlement evidence for reconciliation and disputes.

Why Funding SPEI Payouts from Abroad Is Hard

Problem. You need a peso balance before you can pay. Direct routes to SPEI often mean holding pesos in Mexico. That ties up working capital and forces you to forecast peso needs ahead of time.

Problem. The exchange rate moves under you. Banco de México set the FIX rate at 18.1903 pesos per dollar on October 2, 2026. The exchange rate moves, which makes budgeting and invoice matching messy.

Problem. New payees face waiting periods. Banco de México notes that online banking often asks you to register a new account first and wait before you can pay it. Onboarding a new supplier can stall a payment run.

Problem. Cross-border costs add up. Sending small amounts across borders costs an average of 6.36% of the amount sent, according to the World Bank. On frequent, modest payouts, that drag is material.

Problem. Reconciliation takes care. Each payment needs a consistent reference and a stored CEP so finance teams can match records later.

How SPEI Payouts with Stablecoin Funding Work on Yativo

Yativo separates funding from payout. You hold a float balance funded with USDC or fiat, request a quote when you want to pay, and a licensed local payout partner delivers pesos on SPEI. Your recipient sees a normal local credit, not a crypto transaction.

The flow looks like this:

  1. Fund your float. Top up your Yativo balance with USDC or fiat. Your balance is your working capital, so you are not locking pesos weeks in advance.
  2. Request a quote. Ask for a rate on the amount and corridor you need. The quote shows the rate, fees, delivery time and exact local amount before you confirm, and it holds for 5 minutes.
  3. Submit the payout. Provide the recipient’s CLABE or another accepted identifier, the amount and your reference. A licensed local payout partner executes the SPEI transfer.
  4. Confirm with the CEP. Track payouts in the dashboard or API and keep the CEP as proof of payment for reconciliation and disputes.

Mexico’s SPEI rail handled 7,308.1 million transfers in 2025, so your recipients already expect pesos to arrive in seconds. For a deeper walkthrough of corridor setup and identifiers, see our Mexico SPEI payouts guide.

Yativo has several active gateways. Settlement times below are as listed, and any gateway with POBO in its name requires a POBO endorsement on the account.

Your recipient does not need a crypto wallet. They never see or touch stablecoins. On their side, the payment looks like a normal local transfer.

How to Send SPEI Payouts with Yativo

Option 1: Dashboard (for manual payouts)

  1. Fund your Yativo float balance with either a fiat or a stablecoin deposit, such as USDC.
  2. Go to Transfer in your Yativo dashboard.
  3. Select the float wallet you are paying with, for example USD, EUR, MXN or whichever balance you funded.
  4. Choose the customer you are paying on behalf of. This step is necessary for fintechs that run payouts on behalf of their customers.
  5. Choose Mexico as the destination and SPEI as the payout method.
  6. Enter the recipient details the payout form asks for, such as the account holder name and 18-digit CLABE.
  7. Enter the amount in USD or MXN.
  8. Review the quote: exchange rate, fees, delivery time and the exact MXN amount your recipient receives.
  9. Confirm with your PIN and 2FA.
  10. Track the payout in real time and download the receipt for your records.

Option 2: API (for automated and bulk payouts)

Every endpoint below is in the Yativo API documentation. Production calls go to https://api.yativo.com/api/v1, and the sandbox runs at https://smtp.yativo.com/api/v1.

Authenticate every request with the X-Api-Key and X-Api-Secret headers. Each key only works from the server IPs listed on it. These keys replaced bearer tokens, as covered in our October update. Every POST also needs a unique Idempotency-Key header.

Step 1. Generate a USDC deposit address on Solana to fund your balance:

POST https://api.yativo.com/api/v1/crypto/create-wallet
X-Api-Key: $YATIVO_API_KEY
X-Api-Secret: $YATIVO_API_SECRET
Idempotency-Key: ac3c2fef-e08c-5def-8248-bd831d1e761e
Content-Type: application/json

{
  "currency": "USDC_SOL"
}

Step 2. List the payout methods available for Mexico:

curl "https://api.yativo.com/api/v1/payment-methods/payout?country=MEX" \
  -H "X-Api-Key: $YATIVO_API_KEY" \
  -H "X-Api-Secret: $YATIVO_API_SECRET" \
  -H "Accept: application/json"

In this example, SPEI carries gateway ID 1. Always read the ID from the live response instead of hardcoding it.

Step 3. Fetch the required fields for that gateway:

GET https://api.yativo.com/api/v1/beneficiary/form/show/1
X-Api-Key: $YATIVO_API_KEY
X-Api-Secret: $YATIVO_API_SECRET

The response lists every required field and its accepted values. Build your payment_data object from it. For field details, see API documentation.

Step 4. Create the beneficiary. Replace the placeholder with the fields the form returned:

POST https://api.yativo.com/api/v1/beneficiaries/payment-methods/
X-Api-Key: $YATIVO_API_KEY
X-Api-Secret: $YATIVO_API_SECRET
Idempotency-Key: 93e72039-a6a4-58e2-b4a2-3d5b603d8fc8
Content-Type: application/json

{
  "gateway_id": 1,
  "nickname": "Guadalajara logistics supplier",
  "currency": "MXN",
  "customer_id": "e8caa491-57b6-4c39-9e3a-d2c97e47fbf0",
  "payment_data": {
    "{field_from_form}": "{value}"
  }
}

Step 5. Lock your MXN rate. Quotes hold for 5 minutes:

POST https://api.yativo.com/api/v1/exchange-rate
X-Api-Key: $YATIVO_API_KEY
X-Api-Secret: $YATIVO_API_SECRET
Idempotency-Key: 4ee02f74-3a52-5fee-817e-a898b0757e0d
Content-Type: application/json

{
  "from_currency": "USD",
  "to_currency": "MXN",
  "method_id": 1,
  "method_type": "payout",
  "amount": 800
}

Step 6. Initiate the payout from your balance:

POST https://api.yativo.com/api/v1/wallet/payout
X-Api-Key: $YATIVO_API_KEY
X-Api-Secret: $YATIVO_API_SECRET
Idempotency-Key: 892eadca-24f2-5a81-83f0-82a085460175
Content-Type: application/json

{
  "debit_wallet": "USD",
  "amount": 800,
  "payment_method_id": 48285,
  "customer_id": "e8caa491-57b6-4c39-9e3a-d2c97e47fbf0",
  "quote_id": "4a72ecf8-6c8a-4e38-9971-8aabe9f785ed"
}

Use the id from the beneficiary response as payment_method_id. For bulk runs, repeat the call per beneficiary, as described on our payouts page.

Best Practices for SPEI Payouts

Validate identifiers before you send. Confirm the CLABE or phone number with the recipient in writing. A single wrong digit can send funds to the wrong account.

Quote close to payout time. Rates move, so request a quote when you are ready to execute. Quotes hold for 5 minutes, so confirm while the quote is live.

Standardize references. Put an invoice or employee ID in the payout reference on every transfer. Consistent references make records easier to match later.

Store CEPs automatically. Save each CEP against its payout record. Banco de México lets you look it up for 45 working days.

Batch by corridor and currency. Group payouts by corridor and currency to keep records organized. Keep peso payouts separate from dollar payouts.

Plan for onboarding lag. New payees can face waiting periods; Banco de México notes that online banking often asks you to register a new account first and wait before you can pay it. Collect details early so a first payment does not miss a payroll date.
