Costa Rica is a small market with an unusually international payroll, and stablecoin payouts costa rica are becoming a normal treasury line item. The country’s exports of goods and services reached US$35.2 billion in 2025, up 11%, according to COMEX and PROCOMER.
That growth involves contractors, service providers and shared-service staff who are typically paid into a local account, in colones.
This guide covers the rails that move money inside Costa Rica, and the friction of paying from abroad. It also shows how a stablecoin settlement layer fits into a compliant payout flow.
Why Businesses Pay Out to Costa Rica
Services alone accounted for US$12.5 billion in 2025, and the people behind that work want to be paid in full and on time. Payout profiles usually fall into three groups:
- Contractors and remote staff. Designers, developers, support agents and analysts working for foreign companies.
- Service providers. Agencies, studios and professional firms invoicing overseas clients.
- Local operations. Entities with local staff, suppliers or refund obligations that need colones in a Costa Rican account.
Then there is the currency question. The colón floats, and it moves both ways: the dollar closed at ₡458.67 on Costa Rica’s foreign exchange market (Monex) on October 2, 2026. Any finance team budgeting payouts in dollars is exposed to that movement between approval and arrival.
How Local Payments Work in Costa Rica
SINPE is Costa Rica’s interbank transfer system, run by the Banco Central de Costa Rica. It settled 684.3 million interbank transfers in 2025, 20% more than in 2024, which tells you how much of daily Costa Rican life runs through it.
SINPE immediate payments
Its immediate payments service credits the destination account within seconds, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. SINPE transfers need the recipient’s cédula number and IBAN, so expect those plus the holder’s legal name. Collect all three before you submit anything.
The IBAN is the address
Costa Rican transfers use a 22-character IBAN that starts with CR. It begins with CR, followed by two check digits, and it replaced the old 17-digit client account number. Since 2017, SINPE has processed transfers using only the IBAN, as Banco de Costa Rica explains, so the account number has to be exact.
Dollars inside the local system
Dollars are common in Costa Rica, with 11.9% of the value settled in SINPE paid in US dollars in 2025. That matters for payout design, because the currency you settle in shapes the amount that lands.
The Challenges of Paying Costa Rica from Abroad
Small payments are expensive. Sending small amounts across borders costs an average of 6.36% of the amount sent, according to the World Bank. On a modest contractor invoice, that is a real cut into take-home pay.
FX spreads are not uniform. On the same day the Monex rate sat at ₡458.67, the dollar’s selling price at intermediary counters ranged from ₡460.99 to ₡554.75. Where your payout is converted decides how much the recipient actually gets.
Identifiers are unforgiving. A 22-character IBAN plus a cédula number leaves little room for interpretation. Missing digits, nicknames instead of legal names and mismatched account holders are the usual causes of rejected or returned payments.
Timing is hard to predict. Cross-border settlement can take longer than expected, and the colón can move before funds arrive. Plan for variability rather than assuming a fixed arrival window.

You fund a float balance with USDC or fiat, get a quote, and a licensed local payout partner pays the recipient locally. The recipient never needs a crypto wallet and receives a normal local credit to their own bank account.
- Fund your float. Top up your Yativo balance with USDC or fiat, depending on what your treasury prefers.
- Get a quote. Request a quote for the payout amount before you commit.
- Submit recipient details. Provide the legal name, cédula number and the 22-character CR IBAN, exactly as the bank holds them.
- Settle locally. A licensed local payout partner pays the recipient locally.
For a deeper walkthrough of the colón route, see Costa Rica bank transfer payouts.
Yativo’s active gateways for Costa Rica are Bank Transfer (CRC), POBO (Local) (CRC) and SWIFT (USD). Any gateway with POBO in its name requires a POBO endorsement on the account.

| Bank Transfer (CRC) | 497 | Under 30 minutes |
| POBO (Local) (CRC) | 1390 | T+1 (next business day) |
| SWIFT (USD) | 567 | T+1 (next business day) |
These are the active gateways in Yativo’s catalog today. Always read the live list from the payout-methods endpoint before you route a payment.
Any gateway with POBO in its name requires a POBO endorsement on your account.
Your recipient does not need a crypto wallet. They never see or touch stablecoins. On their side, the payment looks like a normal local transfer.
How to Send Stablecoin Payouts to Costa Rica with Yativo
Option 1: Dashboard (for manual payouts)
- Fund your Yativo float balance with either a fiat or a stablecoin deposit, such as USDC.
- Go to Transfer in your Yativo dashboard.
- Select the float wallet you are paying with, for example USD, EUR, MXN or whichever balance you funded.
- Choose the customer you are paying on behalf of. This step is necessary for fintechs that run payouts on behalf of their customers.
- Choose Costa Rica as the destination and Bank Transfer as the payout method.
- Enter the recipient details the payout form asks for, such as the holder’s legal name, cédula number and 22-character IBAN.
- Enter the amount in USD or CRC.
- Review the quote: exchange rate, fees, delivery time and the exact CRC amount your recipient receives.
- Confirm with your PIN and 2FA.
- Track the payout in real time and download the receipt for your records.
Option 2: API (for automated and bulk payouts)
Every endpoint below is in the Yativo API documentation. Production calls go to https://api.yativo.com/api/v1, and the sandbox runs at https://smtp.yativo.com/api/v1.
Authenticate every request with the X-Api-Key and X-Api-Secret headers. Each key only works from the server IPs listed on it. These keys replaced bearer tokens, as covered in our October update. Every POST also needs a unique Idempotency-Key header.
Step 1. Generate a USDC deposit address on Solana to fund your balance:
POST https://api.yativo.com/api/v1/crypto/create-wallet
X-Api-Key: $YATIVO_API_KEY
X-Api-Secret: $YATIVO_API_SECRET
Idempotency-Key: c3585934-013e-5a7d-b1dc-c8c54da6c327
Content-Type: application/json
{
"currency": "USDC_SOL"
}
Step 2. List the payout methods available for Costa Rica:
curl "https://api.yativo.com/api/v1/payment-methods/payout?country=CRI" \
-H "X-Api-Key: $YATIVO_API_KEY" \
-H "X-Api-Secret: $YATIVO_API_SECRET" \
-H "Accept: application/json"
In this example, Bank Transfer carries gateway ID 497. Always read the ID from the live response instead of hardcoding it.
Step 3. Fetch the required fields for that gateway:
GET https://api.yativo.com/api/v1/beneficiary/form/show/497
X-Api-Key: $YATIVO_API_KEY
X-Api-Secret: $YATIVO_API_SECRET
The response lists every required field and its accepted values. Build your payment_data object from it. For field details, see API documentation.
Step 4. Create the beneficiary. Replace the placeholder with the fields the form returned:
POST https://api.yativo.com/api/v1/beneficiaries/payment-methods/
X-Api-Key: $YATIVO_API_KEY
X-Api-Secret: $YATIVO_API_SECRET
Idempotency-Key: 30f05e61-08e8-5b79-8b62-3449dc69f975
Content-Type: application/json
{
"gateway_id": 497,
"nickname": "San Jose software studio",
"currency": "CRC",
"customer_id": "e8caa491-57b6-4c39-9e3a-d2c97e47fbf0",
"payment_data": {
"{field_from_form}": "{value}"
}
}
Step 5. Lock your CRC rate. Quotes hold for 5 minutes:
POST https://api.yativo.com/api/v1/exchange-rate
X-Api-Key: $YATIVO_API_KEY
X-Api-Secret: $YATIVO_API_SECRET
Idempotency-Key: 2270464a-98a2-597f-bcde-22d693ed8a20
Content-Type: application/json
{
"from_currency": "USD",
"to_currency": "CRC",
"method_id": 497,
"method_type": "payout",
"amount": 400
}
Step 6. Initiate the payout from your balance:
POST https://api.yativo.com/api/v1/wallet/payout
X-Api-Key: $YATIVO_API_KEY
X-Api-Secret: $YATIVO_API_SECRET
Idempotency-Key: 5f3ef7af-47a5-5df2-9a32-25819f2d9034
Content-Type: application/json
{
"debit_wallet": "USD",
"amount": 400,
"payment_method_id": 48292,
"customer_id": "e8caa491-57b6-4c39-9e3a-d2c97e47fbf0",
"quote_id": "4a72ecf8-6c8a-4e38-9971-8aabe9f785ed"
}
Use the id from the beneficiary response as payment_method_id. For bulk runs, repeat the call per beneficiary, as described on our payouts page.

Best Practices for Paying Out in Costa Rica
Validate the IBAN before the first payment. Use the 22-character IBAN that starts with CR, followed by two check digits. Store the validated string and reuse it rather than retyping.
Collect the cédula and legal name together. SINPE transfers need the recipient’s cédula number and IBAN, and the name on the account must match. Ask the recipient to confirm the details in writing.
Quote before you commit. The colón floats, and bank spreads vary widely. A quote shows the rate, fees, delivery time and exact local amount before you confirm.
Batch by rail, not by convenience. Match each payout to the rail that fits its timing needs, and plan around the settlement window you choose.
Keep amounts inside the rail limits. Yativo’s Bank Transfer (CRC) gateway accepts CRC 10,000 to 10,000,000 per payout. Check the limit before you submit a large batch.
Tell recipients what to expect. A short note explaining the amount, the currency and the expected timing can help recipients.
