Your QA team in Heredia invoices in colones. Every month you send a dollar wire, wait for it to clear, and then field questions about why the amount came in short.
Local bank transfer payouts to Costa Rica with stablecoin settlement fix that routine. You fund in USDC or USD, lock a quote, and your recipient gets colones (CRC) in their own IBAN account.
The demand is real. Costa Rica’s exports of goods and services reached US$35.2 billion in 2025, up 11%, according to COMEX and PROCOMER. Services alone brought in US$12.5 billion.
This guide covers why Costa Rica payouts break, how the stablecoin-funded flow works, and which recipient details you need. It then walks through your first CRC payout by dashboard and by API.
Why Paying Out in Costa Rica Is Harder Than It Should Be
Costa Rica runs one of the most advanced payment systems in Latin America. The friction sits at the border, where your foreign payment meets a floating colón and wide bank spreads.
The colón floats, and it moves both ways. The dollar closed at ₡458.67 on Costa Rica’s foreign exchange market (Monex) on October 2, 2026. After months of expected colón strength, one analyst told La Nación the market now shows more volatility in both directions.
Bank spreads vary widely. On the same day, the dollar’s selling price at intermediary counters ranged from ₡460.99 to ₡554.75. The rate your recipient’s bank applies can matter as much as the wire fee.
Small cross-border transfers are expensive. Sending small amounts abroad costs an average of 6.36% of the amount sent, according to the World Bank. On a US$30,000 monthly contractor payroll, that average would cost you US$1,908 every month. We break down more of these costs in the hidden costs of international payments.
The account number has to be exact. Costa Rican transfers use a 22-character IBAN that starts with CR. A wrong character, or a dollar account instead of a colón account, sends the payout back.
Local Bank Transfer Payouts to Costa Rica with a Stablecoin Layer: How It Works
Yativo is payment infrastructure, not a bank. We use stablecoins as the settlement layer between your balance and Costa Rica. A licensed local payout partner then delivers the colones on the ground.
- You fund your Yativo float balance with a fiat or stablecoin deposit, such as USDC.
- Yativo converts the payout value to USDC and settles it on-chain.
- A licensed local payout partner in Costa Rica receives the stablecoin settlement.
- The partner converts USDC to CRC and sends a domestic bank transfer to the recipient’s IBAN.
- Your recipient receives colones in their normal bank account.
Your recipient does not need a crypto wallet. They never see or touch stablecoins. On their side, the payment looks like any domestic transfer from a local sender.
Delivery runs on SINPE, the national electronic payment system run by the Banco Central de Costa Rica (BCCR). SINPE settled 684.3 million interbank transfers in 2025, 20% more than in 2024. For more on the settlement layer, read how to receive international payments in stablecoins.
Supported Payout Rails for Costa Rica
Yativo’s active CRC payout method for this guide is Bank Transfer, which pays colones into an IBAN account at a Costa Rican bank. Our Costa Rica list also includes a POBO (Local) method and SWIFT.
Bank Transfer (CRC)
Interbank transfers in colones move over SINPE. Its immediate payments service credits the destination account within seconds, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Its direct credits service credits funds by 10:00 p.m. on the same day.
Required details: the fields returned by the Costa Rica payout form, gateway ID 497. SINPE transfers need the recipient’s cédula number and IBAN, so expect those plus the holder’s legal name.
Settlement time: your quote shows the delivery time before you confirm the payout.
Best for: suppliers, agencies, contractors and payroll recipients with a Costa Rican bank account in colones.
POBO (Local)
POBO (Local), gateway ID 1390, also pays CRC. It needs the Collection/Payment-on-behalf-of endorsement on your customer, so check with your account executive before you use it.
USD alternatives
Dollars are common in Costa Rica, with 11.9% of the value settled in SINPE paid in US dollars in 2025. Bank Transfer (CRC) delivers colones only. If your recipient wants dollars, use SWIFT, gateway ID 567, which pays USD.
Recipient Details to Collect Before Your First CRC Payout
The Costa Rica payout form in our API is the authoritative field list. Collect the details below during onboarding so you can fill it without a round of emails.
- Holder type: individual or company.
- Legal name: full name as it appears on the cédula, or the registered company name.
- Cédula number: the cédula de identidad for individuals, or the cédula jurídica for companies.
- IBAN: all 22 characters, starting with CR, copied from a bank statement or app.
- Account currency: confirm the IBAN belongs to a colón account, not a dollar account.
- Email: for the beneficiary record and payment notices.
- Payment purpose: for example supplier payment, services or payroll.
Ask for the IBAN, not the old client account number. Since 2017, SINPE has processed transfers using only the IBAN, as Banco de Costa Rica explains.
How to Send a CRC Payout via Yativo
Option 1: Dashboard (for manual payouts)
- Fund your Yativo float balance with either a fiat or a stablecoin deposit.
- Go to Transfer in your Yativo dashboard.
- Select the float wallet you are paying with, for example USD, EUR, MXN or whichever balance you funded.
- Choose the customer you are paying on behalf of. This step is necessary for fintechs that run payouts on behalf of their customers.
- Choose Costa Rica as the destination country and the Bank Transfer payout method.
- Enter the recipient details the Costa Rica payout form asks for, such as the holder’s legal name, cédula number and 22-character IBAN.
- Enter the amount in USD or CRC.
- Review the quote: exchange rate, fees, delivery time and the exact CRC amount your recipient receives.
- Confirm with your PIN and 2FA.
- Track the payout in real time and download the receipt for your records.
Option 2: API (for automated and bulk payouts)
Every endpoint below is in the Yativo API documentation. Production calls go to https://api.yativo.com/api/v1, and the sandbox runs at https://smtp.yativo.com/api/v1.
Authenticate every request with the X-Api-Key and X-Api-Secret headers. Each key only works from the server IPs listed on it. These API keys replaced bearer tokens, and login tokens stop working from servers on October 15, 2026, as covered in our October update. Every POST request also needs a unique Idempotency-Key header.
Step 1. Generate a USDC funding address on Solana to top up your USD balance:
POST https://api.yativo.com/api/v1/crypto/create-wallet
X-Api-Key: $YATIVO_API_KEY
X-Api-Secret: $YATIVO_API_SECRET
Idempotency-Key: 4c3b2a1d-0e9f-4b8a-9c7d-6e5f4a3b2c1d
Content-Type: application/json
{
"currency": "USDC_SOL"
}
Step 2. List the payout methods available for Costa Rica:
curl "https://api.yativo.com/api/v1/payment-methods/payout?country=CRI" \
-H "X-Api-Key: $YATIVO_API_KEY" \
-H "X-Api-Secret: $YATIVO_API_SECRET" \
-H "Accept: application/json"
Bank Transfer (CRC) is active and carries gateway ID 497. Always read the ID from the live response instead of hardcoding it.
Step 3. Fetch the required fields for that gateway:
GET https://api.yativo.com/api/v1/beneficiary/form/show/497
X-Api-Key: $YATIVO_API_KEY
X-Api-Secret: $YATIVO_API_SECRET
The response lists every required field and the accepted values for each one. Build your payment_data object from it. For field details, see API documentation.
Step 4. Create the beneficiary. Replace the placeholder with the fields the form returned:
POST https://api.yativo.com/api/v1/beneficiaries/payment-methods/
X-Api-Key: $YATIVO_API_KEY
X-Api-Secret: $YATIVO_API_SECRET
Idempotency-Key: 0a1b2c3d-4e5f-4a6b-8c7d-9e0f1a2b3c4e
Content-Type: application/json
{
"gateway_id": 497,
"nickname": "Pura Vida Software SRL",
"currency": "CRC",
"customer_id": "e8caa491-57b6-4c39-9e3a-d2c97e47fbf0",
"payment_data": {
"{field_from_form}": "{value}"
}
}
Step 5. Optionally, lock your rate. Quotes hold for 5 minutes:
POST https://api.yativo.com/api/v1/exchange-rate
X-Api-Key: $YATIVO_API_KEY
X-Api-Secret: $YATIVO_API_SECRET
Idempotency-Key: 7d6c5b4a-3f2e-4d1c-8b0a-9f8e7d6c5b4b
Content-Type: application/json
{
"from_currency": "USD",
"to_currency": "CRC",
"method_id": 497,
"method_type": "payout",
"amount": 2500
}
Step 6. Initiate the payout from your USD balance:
POST https://api.yativo.com/api/v1/wallet/payout
X-Api-Key: $YATIVO_API_KEY
X-Api-Secret: $YATIVO_API_SECRET
Idempotency-Key: 2e3f4a5b-6c7d-4e8f-9a0b-1c2d3e4f5a6c
Content-Type: application/json
{
"debit_wallet": "USD",
"amount": 2500,
"payment_method_id": 4833,
"customer_id": "e8caa491-57b6-4c39-9e3a-d2c97e47fbf0",
"quote_id": "4a72ecf8-6c8a-4e38-9971-8aabe9f785ed"
}
Use the id from the beneficiary response as payment_method_id. Leave out quote_id if you did not lock a rate. For bulk runs, repeat the call per beneficiary, as described on our payouts page.

Best Practices for Costa Rica Payouts
Validate the IBAN before you pay. A Costa Rican IBAN is always 22 characters and starts with CR. Check the length and prefix in your onboarding form to catch typos early.
Match the cédula to the account holder. SINPE transfers carry the recipient’s cédula number. Make sure it belongs to the person or company that owns the IBAN.
Agree on the invoice currency. Many Costa Ricans hold both colón and dollar accounts. Decide up front whether you pay in CRC by bank transfer or in USD by SWIFT.
Lock the rate on large payouts. The colón can swing within days. Exchange-rate quotes hold for 5 minutes, so lock one for payroll runs and large invoices.
Stop hardcoding retired gateway IDs. The SINPE (CRI) method, gateway 1356, was sunset on September 2, 2026. Read gateway IDs from the payout methods endpoint at runtime instead.
Run one playbook across LATAM. The same flow works in other markets. See our guide to local payouts to Argentina via bank transfer and our breakdown of LATAM payout rails.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does my recipient in Costa Rica need a crypto wallet?
No. Your recipient gets colones in their normal Costa Rican bank account. They never interact with stablecoins, and the payment arrives as a domestic transfer.
Is it legal and compliant to pay Costa Rican recipients this way?
Yes, when the payout runs through regulated infrastructure. Yativo is registered with FinCEN as a Money Services Business, registration number 31000270723339. A licensed local payout partner makes the domestic transfer, so your recipient sees a normal local payment. Your own tax and reporting duties still apply, so confirm them with your compliance advisor.
How long does a CRC payout take?
Your Yativo quote shows the delivery time before you confirm, so you know it before you send. On the local side, SINPE immediate payments credit the destination account within seconds, 24 hours a day, according to the Banco Central de Costa Rica.
What is a Costa Rican IBAN?
It is the 22-character account number every Costa Rican bank uses for SINPE transfers. It starts with CR, followed by two check digits, and it replaced the old 17-digit client account number.
Can I pay a SINPE Móvil phone number?
Not with this method. Bank Transfer pays into an IBAN account. Ask your recipient for the IBAN of the colón account linked to their phone number.
Can my recipient receive US dollars instead of colones?
Not through this rail, which delivers CRC. For dollars, use SWIFT, which pays USD. Check GET /payment-methods/payout?country=CRI for the methods enabled on your account, or ask your account executive.
