Stablecoin Payouts to Kenya: The Complete Guide for Businesses

Stablecoin Payouts to Kenya: The Complete Guide for Businesses

Kenya is a high-volume payout market in Africa, and stablecoin payouts kenya businesses run today settle through local rails. The country took in about US$5.037 billion in diaspora remittances in 2025, according to Central Bank of Kenya data. That volume means local delivery rails are built for scale.

For a finance or product team, the question is no longer whether Kenya can receive money quickly. It is how to fund that payout from a stablecoin balance, convert cleanly into shillings, and land the money in a bank account or mobile wallet the recipient already uses.

This guide covers the rails, the friction points, and how settlement works on Yativo. It stays practical, with what arrives, how fast, and what to watch as volume grows.

Why Businesses Pay Out to Kenya

Kenya sits at the intersection of three payout use cases: trade settlement, remittances and contractor payroll.

Remittances alone reached about US$5.037 billion in 2025, roughly KSh 650 billion. That volume tells you the receiving side is well served. Recipients expect funds in shillings, on a wallet or bank account, without a trip to a branch.

Trade and services add a second layer. Suppliers, logistics providers and professional services firms invoice in foreign currency but pay local costs in shillings. Marketplaces and platforms add a third: sellers, drivers and creators who need frequent, small payouts.

Treasury teams also look for faster conversion and less idle float. Stablecoin funding lets them hold value in dollars and convert at the moment of payout.

How Local Payments Work in Kenya

Two rails carry most domestic delivery. Both are fast, and both are reachable through a licensed local payout partner.

PesaLink (bank to bank)

PesaLink moves bank-to-bank payments instantly, 24/7, across more than 80 participants. It credits accounts in real time up to KSh 999,999.

M-PESA and mobile money

M-PESA alone processed about KSh 38.29 trillion in FY2025 across 37.15 billion transactions. Safaricom reported 35.82 million one-month active users in the same period. Our guide to Kenya mobile money payouts covers wallet-specific handling.

SWIFT gateways for cross-border legs

For SWIFT routes, Yativo offers SWIFT (POBO) (KES), gateway ID 1119, and SWIFT (USD), gateway ID 631. Both settle T+1 (next business day).

The Challenges of Paying Kenya from Abroad

Cost of small cross-border transfers. Sending small amounts across borders costs an average of 6.36% of the amount sent, according to the World Bank. On a payroll run of many small payments, that percentage compounds quickly.

Timing expectations. Settlement speed depends on the rail and the gateway you choose. Local rails settle in under 30 minutes, while SWIFT routes settle T+1.

Identifier accuracy. Collect the right account or wallet details up front. Confirm them with the recipient before the first payout run.

Float management. Pre-funding a shilling balance ties up working capital. Holding USDC until the moment of conversion limits exposure to currency movement.

How Stablecoin Payouts to Kenya Work on Yativo

Yativo uses stablecoins as a settlement layer, not as the payment the recipient receives. You fund a float balance with USDC or fiat. We quote the conversion, a licensed local payout partner delivers shillings locally, and the recipient sees a normal local credit. They never need a crypto wallet.

  1. Fund your float balance. Top up with USDC or fiat through your account. The balance is what payouts draw from.
  2. Create the payout and get a quote. Enter the recipient, the amount and the rail. You see the conversion and the amount the recipient will receive before you confirm.
  3. Confirm and route. Yativo sends the instruction to a licensed local payout partner on the matching rail, bank or mobile money.
  4. Track settlement. Each payout carries a status you can reconcile against your ledger. Delivery times follow the gateway you selected.

If you want the mechanics in more depth, see how to convert USDC to KES and our overview of Kenya bank and mobile money payouts.

Yativo runs four active gateways for Kenya. Local Payout KES (bank and mobile money), gateway ID 868, settles in under 30 minutes and pays KES 150 to 999,999 per payout. Mobile Money (KE), gateway ID 1323, settles in under 30 minutes and pays KES 20 to 150,000. SWIFT (POBO) (KES), gateway ID 1119, settles T+1 (next business day) and requires a POBO endorsement on the account. SWIFT (USD), gateway ID 631, settles T+1 (next business day).

GatewayIDSettlement
Local Payout KES (bank and mobile money)868Under 30 minutes
Mobile Money (KE)1323Under 30 minutes
SWIFT (POBO), KES1119T+1 (next business day)
SWIFT (USD)631T+1 (next business day)

These are the active gateways in Yativo’s catalog today. Always read the live list from the payout-methods endpoint before you route a payment.

Any gateway with POBO in its name requires a POBO endorsement on your account.

Your recipient does not need a crypto wallet. They never see or touch stablecoins. On their side, the payment looks like a normal local transfer.

How to Send Stablecoin Payouts to Kenya with Yativo

Option 1: Dashboard (for manual payouts)

  1. Fund your Yativo float balance with either a fiat or a stablecoin deposit, such as USDC.
  2. Go to Transfer in your Yativo dashboard.
  3. Select the float wallet you are paying with, for example USD, EUR, MXN or whichever balance you funded.
  4. Choose the customer you are paying on behalf of. This step is necessary for fintechs that run payouts on behalf of their customers.
  5. Choose Kenya as the destination and Local Payout as the payout method.
  6. Enter the recipient details the payout form asks for, such as the holder’s name, ID, bank account or mobile money number and network.
  7. Enter the amount in USD or KES.
  8. Review the quote: exchange rate, fees, delivery time and the exact KES amount your recipient receives.
  9. Confirm with your PIN and 2FA.
  10. Track the payout in real time and download the receipt for your records.

Option 2: API (for automated and bulk payouts)

Every endpoint below is in the Yativo API documentation. Production calls go to https://api.yativo.com/api/v1, and the sandbox runs at https://smtp.yativo.com/api/v1.

Authenticate every request with the X-Api-Key and X-Api-Secret headers. Each key only works from the server IPs listed on it. These keys replaced bearer tokens, as covered in our October update. Every POST also needs a unique Idempotency-Key header.

Step 1. Generate a USDC deposit address on Solana to fund your balance:

POST https://api.yativo.com/api/v1/crypto/create-wallet
X-Api-Key: $YATIVO_API_KEY
X-Api-Secret: $YATIVO_API_SECRET
Idempotency-Key: 0498c9c7-82e1-5a92-9c32-38e01a642293
Content-Type: application/json

{
  "currency": "USDC_SOL"
}

Step 2. List the payout methods available for Kenya:

curl "https://api.yativo.com/api/v1/payment-methods/payout?country=KEN" \
  -H "X-Api-Key: $YATIVO_API_KEY" \
  -H "X-Api-Secret: $YATIVO_API_SECRET" \
  -H "Accept: application/json"

In this example, Local Payout carries gateway ID 868. Always read the ID from the live response instead of hardcoding it.

Step 3. Fetch the required fields for that gateway:

GET https://api.yativo.com/api/v1/beneficiary/form/show/868
X-Api-Key: $YATIVO_API_KEY
X-Api-Secret: $YATIVO_API_SECRET

The response lists every required field and its accepted values. Build your payment_data object from it. For field details, see API documentation.

Step 4. Create the beneficiary. Replace the placeholder with the fields the form returned:

POST https://api.yativo.com/api/v1/beneficiaries/payment-methods/
X-Api-Key: $YATIVO_API_KEY
X-Api-Secret: $YATIVO_API_SECRET
Idempotency-Key: 6c9d58d5-2ea0-551c-85da-f2076ba0e32d
Content-Type: application/json

{
  "gateway_id": 868,
  "nickname": "Nairobi dev agency",
  "currency": "KES",
  "customer_id": "e8caa491-57b6-4c39-9e3a-d2c97e47fbf0",
  "payment_data": {
    "{field_from_form}": "{value}"
  }
}

Step 5. Lock your KES rate. Quotes hold for 5 minutes:

POST https://api.yativo.com/api/v1/exchange-rate
X-Api-Key: $YATIVO_API_KEY
X-Api-Secret: $YATIVO_API_SECRET
Idempotency-Key: 054c39dc-a894-5ad0-9d32-8789b8ebd0de
Content-Type: application/json

{
  "from_currency": "USD",
  "to_currency": "KES",
  "method_id": 868,
  "method_type": "payout",
  "amount": 400
}

Step 6. Initiate the payout from your balance:

POST https://api.yativo.com/api/v1/wallet/payout
X-Api-Key: $YATIVO_API_KEY
X-Api-Secret: $YATIVO_API_SECRET
Idempotency-Key: 0c6bb7ac-90b1-5259-b4a7-b971162577a4
Content-Type: application/json

{
  "debit_wallet": "USD",
  "amount": 400,
  "payment_method_id": 48305,
  "customer_id": "e8caa491-57b6-4c39-9e3a-d2c97e47fbf0",
  "quote_id": "4a72ecf8-6c8a-4e38-9971-8aabe9f785ed"
}

Use the id from the beneficiary response as payment_method_id. For bulk runs, repeat the call per beneficiary, as described on our payouts page.

Best Practices for Paying Out in Kenya

Pick the rail by amount. Local Payout KES pays KES 150 to 999,999 per payout; Mobile Money (KE) pays KES 20 to 150,000.

Keep float in stablecoins and convert at payout. Holding USDC until the moment of conversion limits exposure to currency movement. It also keeps working capital free rather than parked in a pre-funded local balance.

Set expectations from real settlement times. Local rails settle in under 30 minutes, SWIFT in T+1.

Use the quote before you confirm. The quote shows the rate, fees, delivery time and exact local amount. Quotes hold for 5 minutes.

Track every payout. Payouts can be tracked in the dashboard or API, so reconciliation stays simple as volume grows.

Plan for scale across channels. Our guide to mobile money payouts in Africa covers how to extend this approach beyond Kenya.
