How to Pay Contractors and Freelancers in Italy with Stablecoins

How to Pay Contractors and Freelancers in Italy with Stablecoins

If your company needs to pay contractors Italy, the payout itself should be the easy part. Italy took in about US$12.8 billion in personal remittances in 2025, according to World Bank data. That is a lot of money moving into Italian accounts every year.

For a business, the goal is narrower. The goal is a euro payout, on time, with a clean record you can reconcile later. This guide covers how payouts to contractors in Italy work when you fund them with stablecoins. It focuses on the parts finance and engineering teams actually control: currency, rails, identifiers and timing.

Why Companies Work with Contractors and Freelancers in Italy

Italy is a market where cross-border payments into local accounts are served by local infrastructure. The payment volume into the country shows it. Money moving into Italian bank accounts is a normal occurrence.

A contractor payment is a euro credit to a local account. The payment should arrive when you said it would. It should carry a reference the contractor can match to an invoice. Euro payout demand across the region is large and steady. France alone received about US$40.4 billion in personal remittances in 2025.

For more on the mechanics, see our guide to stablecoin payouts to Italy.

What Contractors in Italy Expect from a Payment

A contractor payment in Italy is a euro credit to a local account. Behind that simple fact sit a few rails and identifiers you should know.

Bank SEPA (IT)

SEPA is a euro credit transfer scheme. Instant Credit Transfers already made up 30.7% of SCT volume in Q3 2025, with nearly 2,800 scheme participants. Euro-area payment service providers had to receive SCT Inst by January 2025 and send by October 2025. SEPA Instant is the same scheme family with near-real-time credits when both ends support it. The identifier you need is the IBAN, so get it right at onboarding.

POBO (Local) (EUR)

POBO (Local) (EUR) is a local payout gateway. Any gateway with POBO in its name requires a POBO endorsement on the account. It settles T+1, next business day.

SWIFT (POBO) (EUR) and SWIFT (USD)

SWIFT (POBO) (EUR) and SWIFT (USD) are active gateways for Italy. Both settle T+1, next business day. They are a slower fallback when local rails cannot reach the account.

The Challenges When You Pay Contractors in Italy from Abroad

Currency conversion sits in the middle of the payment. If you hold dollars and the contractor invoices in euros, the conversion has to happen somewhere in the chain.

Small cross-border payments are expensive. Sending small amounts across borders costs an average of 6.36% of the amount sent, according to the World Bank. For frequent contractor invoices, that adds up quickly.

Timing is hard to predict on correspondent routes. A payment can leave your account and land later than expected. Contractors notice, and they follow up.

Data quality breaks payouts. A missing IBAN digit, a mismatched account name or a currency that does not match the account can stall a payment.

How to Pay Contractors in Italy with Stablecoins on Yativo

Yativo lets you fund a float balance with USDC or fiat, get a quote, and have a licensed local payout partner pay the contractor locally. The recipient never needs a crypto wallet and receives a normal local credit. EURC deposits credit your EUR balance. A EUR payout funded with EURC quotes from EUR and debits your EUR wallet, so no USD conversion is involved. EURC is a euro-backed stablecoin issued by Circle, the same issuer as USDC.

  1. Fund your balance. Deposit USDC or fiat into your Yativo account. If you want to pay in euros without a USD conversion, deposit EURC.
  2. Request a quote. Confirm the payout currency, the amount the contractor should receive and the rail you want to use.
  3. Add the contractor’s details. Capture the IBAN, account name and payout currency. Keep these records clean from the first payment.
  4. Confirm and track. Yativo routes the payout to a licensed local payout partner, which credits the contractor locally. You get a record for reconciliation.

For the rail level detail, read Italy SEPA payouts.

EURC deposits credit your EUR balance. A EUR payout funded with EURC quotes from EUR and debits your EUR wallet, so no USD conversion is involved.

Your recipient does not need a crypto wallet. They never see or touch stablecoins. On their side, the payment looks like a normal local transfer.

How to Send Stablecoin Payouts to Italy with Yativo

Option 1: Dashboard (for manual payouts)

  1. Fund your Yativo float balance with either a fiat or a stablecoin deposit, such as USDC.
  2. Go to Transfer in your Yativo dashboard.
  3. Select the float wallet you are paying with, for example USD, EUR, MXN or whichever balance you funded.
  4. Choose the customer you are paying on behalf of. This step is necessary for fintechs that run payouts on behalf of their customers.
  5. Choose Italy as the destination and Bank SEPA (IT) as the payout method.
  6. Enter the recipient details the payout form asks for, such as the holder’s name, IBAN and BIC.
  7. Enter the amount in USD or EUR.
  8. Review the quote: exchange rate, fees, delivery time and the exact EUR amount your recipient receives.
  9. Confirm with your PIN and 2FA.
  10. Track the payout in real time and download the receipt for your records.

Option 2: API (for automated and bulk payouts)

Every endpoint below is in the Yativo API documentation. Production calls go to https://api.yativo.com/api/v1, and the sandbox runs at https://smtp.yativo.com/api/v1.

Authenticate every request with the X-Api-Key and X-Api-Secret headers. Each key only works from the server IPs listed on it. These keys replaced bearer tokens, as covered in our October update. Every POST also needs a unique Idempotency-Key header.

Step 1. Generate an EURC deposit address on Solana to fund your EUR balance (USDC_SOL also works):

POST https://api.yativo.com/api/v1/crypto/create-wallet
X-Api-Key: $YATIVO_API_KEY
X-Api-Secret: $YATIVO_API_SECRET
Idempotency-Key: c23b7565-9c2f-5340-9f0d-967f15708d28
Content-Type: application/json

{
  "currency": "EURC_SOL"
}

Step 2. List the payout methods available for Italy:

curl "https://api.yativo.com/api/v1/payment-methods/payout?country=ITA" \
  -H "X-Api-Key: $YATIVO_API_KEY" \
  -H "X-Api-Secret: $YATIVO_API_SECRET" \
  -H "Accept: application/json"

In this example, Bank SEPA (IT) carries gateway ID 1235. Always read the ID from the live response instead of hardcoding it.

Step 3. Fetch the required fields for that gateway:

GET https://api.yativo.com/api/v1/beneficiary/form/show/1235
X-Api-Key: $YATIVO_API_KEY
X-Api-Secret: $YATIVO_API_SECRET

The response lists every required field and its accepted values. Build your payment_data object from it. For field details, see API documentation.

Step 4. Create the beneficiary. Replace the placeholder with the fields the form returned:

POST https://api.yativo.com/api/v1/beneficiaries/payment-methods/
X-Api-Key: $YATIVO_API_KEY
X-Api-Secret: $YATIVO_API_SECRET
Idempotency-Key: 9ddf6ad8-e5eb-553d-96e7-f2156862ed10
Content-Type: application/json

{
  "gateway_id": 1235,
  "nickname": "Milan fashion brand",
  "currency": "EUR",
  "customer_id": "e8caa491-57b6-4c39-9e3a-d2c97e47fbf0",
  "payment_data": {
    "{field_from_form}": "{value}"
  }
}

Step 5. Request a quote for the EUR payout. Quotes hold for 5 minutes:

POST https://api.yativo.com/api/v1/exchange-rate
X-Api-Key: $YATIVO_API_KEY
X-Api-Secret: $YATIVO_API_SECRET
Idempotency-Key: 14df302e-9511-57ce-b98d-caf8839f1142
Content-Type: application/json

{
  "from_currency": "EUR",
  "to_currency": "EUR",
  "method_id": 1235,
  "method_type": "payout",
  "amount": 1000
}

Step 6. Initiate the payout from your EUR balance:

POST https://api.yativo.com/api/v1/wallet/payout
X-Api-Key: $YATIVO_API_KEY
X-Api-Secret: $YATIVO_API_SECRET
Idempotency-Key: 4ecf19bc-f403-5fc6-8278-10ddf589920e
Content-Type: application/json

{
  "debit_wallet": "EUR",
  "amount": 1000,
  "payment_method_id": 48349,
  "customer_id": "e8caa491-57b6-4c39-9e3a-d2c97e47fbf0",
  "quote_id": "4a72ecf8-6c8a-4e38-9971-8aabe9f785ed"
}

Use the id from the beneficiary response as payment_method_id. For bulk runs, repeat the call per beneficiary, as described on our payouts page.

Best Practices for Paying Contractors in Italy

Collect identifiers at onboarding. Ask for the IBAN, account holder name and payout currency before the first invoice. Store them once and reuse them, so every payout starts from verified data.

Agree the payout currency in the contract. State whether the contractor is paid in EUR and who bears any conversion. This removes the most common dispute before it starts.

Batch on a fixed schedule. Group invoices into a weekly or twice monthly run. Batching reduces the number of small cross-border payments, which are the expensive ones.

Quote before confirming. Check the rate and the amount the contractor will actually receive before you commit.

Keep reconciliation records. Keep the quote, the payout reference and the contractor invoice together for reconciliation.

Keep classification and tax duties with the company and its advisors. Contractor classification and tax duties stay with the company and its advisors. Work that out with your own advisors.

Frequently Asked Questions

How fast does a SEPA payout to an Italian contractor arrive?

On Yativo’s Bank SEPA (IT) gateway, settlement is under 30 minutes. SEPA Instant is the same scheme family with near-real-time credits when both ends support it, and Instant Credit Transfers already made up 30.7% of SCT volume in Q3 2025. Euro-area providers had to receive SCT Inst by January 2025 and send by October 2025.

What identifiers do I need to pay a contractor in Italy?

You need the contractor’s IBAN, the account holder name and the payout currency. Collect them once at onboarding and reuse them for every invoice.

When should I use SWIFT instead of a local euro rail?

SWIFT (POBO) (EUR) and SWIFT (USD) are active gateways for Italy, and both settle T+1, next business day. Use them when the contractor’s account cannot be reached through Bank SEPA (IT), which settles in under 30 minutes.

Can I pay an Italian contractor in euros without converting from dollars?

Yes. EURC deposits credit your EUR balance, and a EUR payout funded with EURC quotes from EUR and debits your EUR wallet, so no USD conversion is involved. EURC is a euro-backed stablecoin issued by Circle, the same issuer as USDC.

Does my recipient need a crypto wallet?

No. Your recipient gets a normal local credit in their usual account or wallet. They never touch stablecoins, and the payment looks like any other domestic transfer.

Is paying out this way legal and compliant?

Yes, when it runs through regulated infrastructure. Yativo is registered with FinCEN as a Money Services Business, registration number 31000270723339. A licensed local payout partner handles the local leg. Your own tax and reporting duties still apply, so confirm them with your advisor.

How long does a quote last?

Quotes from the exchange-rate endpoint hold for 5 minutes. You see the rate, the fees and the exact amount your recipient gets before you confirm.
