How to Pay Contractors and Freelancers in Panama with Stablecoins

How to Pay Contractors and Freelancers in Panama with Stablecoins

Paying contractors and freelancers in Panama from abroad often looks simple until the money has to land. If you pay contractors panama-based teams regularly, you know the gap between sent and received. This guide explains how stablecoins connect to local rails.

Panama’s international banking center held US$163.0 billion in net assets at the end of 2025, according to the Superintendencia de Bancos. Panama has used the US dollar alongside the balboa, fixed at par, since its 1904 monetary law.

The practical question is not whether stablecoins work. It is how to connect a USDC balance to a normal local credit. That is the part Yativo handles, and it is the part this post covers.

Why Companies Work with Contractors and Freelancers in Panama

Panama runs on the US dollar, so a company paying overseas talent skips an entire layer of currency conversion. Your contract can be written in dollars and settled in dollars. A contractor in Panama City does not need to think about exchange rates, and your finance team does not need to forecast them. Both sides see the same number.

The banking infrastructure matters too. That scale sits alongside a domestic rail system that moves dollars every day.

What Contractors in Panama Expect from a Payment

Payouts in Panama run through the domestic system. Payouts arrive in US dollars as a local bank credit that can be matched to an invoice.

Bank transfers in US dollars

Bank Transfer (USD), gateway ID 500, settles in under 30 minutes. The recipient receives a normal local credit.

ACH and ACH Xpress

Local ACH transfers between Panamanian banks can take up to 24 hours or more, according to Banco Delta. ACH Xpress moves money between banks around the clock, but it caps each transfer at US$5,000.

ACH Xpress processed more than 1.9 million transfers in 2024, up 165.3%, and Telered handled 349 million transactions across its network. Panama’s interbank network now reaches 21 banks on ACH Xpress, including Banco General, BAC, Banistmo and Caja de Ahorros.

Identifiers your payout partner will ask for

Collect the contractor’s payout identifiers at onboarding, store them carefully and reuse them on every payment. That single step keeps each payout run clean and avoids last-minute requests for missing data.

The Challenges When You Pay Contractors in Panama from Abroad

Cross-border costs eat into small invoices. Sending small amounts across borders costs an average of 6.36% of the amount sent, according to the World Bank, per its Remittance Prices Worldwide data. On a monthly retainer, that is a real line item.

Speed varies by rail. The chosen rail settles on its own schedule. Agree on timing before the first invoice.

Reconciliation needs a shared reference. When the sender and receiver see different records, matching payments to invoices becomes manual work every month. Agree early on what reference each payment will carry.

Currency questions add friction. Panama is dollarized, but contracts and invoices still need a stated payout currency. Settle that in writing before the first payment run.

How to Pay Contractors in Panama with Stablecoins on Yativo

Yativo uses stablecoins as a settlement layer, not as the end product. You fund a float balance with USDC or with fiat, request a quote for the payout, and a licensed local payout partner pays your contractor locally through the domestic system.

The recipient never needs a crypto wallet and receives a normal local credit. For a deeper walkthrough, see our guide to stablecoin payouts to Panama.

  1. Fund your float balance. Top up with USDC or fiat. USDC converts to USD 1:1, and fees still apply.
  2. Add the contractor’s payout details. Capture the contractor’s payout details once, then reuse them.
  3. Request and confirm a quote. Request and confirm a quote before you release the payout.
  4. Release the payout. A licensed local payout partner pays your contractor locally, and the recipient receives a normal local credit.

For the rail-level detail, read our post on Panama bank transfer payouts. If you want to understand the conversion step itself, see how to convert USDC to USD.

Your recipient does not need a crypto wallet. They never see or touch stablecoins. On their side, the payment looks like a normal local transfer.

How to Send Stablecoin Payouts to Panama with Yativo

Option 1: Dashboard (for manual payouts)

  1. Fund your Yativo float balance with either a fiat or a stablecoin deposit, such as USDC.
  2. Go to Transfer in your Yativo dashboard.
  3. Select the float wallet you are paying with, for example USD, EUR, MXN or whichever balance you funded.
  4. Choose the customer you are paying on behalf of. This step is necessary for fintechs that run payouts on behalf of their customers.
  5. Choose Panama as the destination and Bank Transfer as the payout method.
  6. Enter the recipient details the payout form asks for, such as the holder’s name, cédula or RUC, bank, account type and account number.
  7. Enter the amount in USD.
  8. Review the quote: exchange rate, fees, delivery time and the exact USD amount your recipient receives.
  9. Confirm with your PIN and 2FA.
  10. Track the payout in real time and download the receipt for your records.

Option 2: API (for automated and bulk payouts)

Every endpoint below is in the Yativo API documentation. Production calls go to https://api.yativo.com/api/v1, and the sandbox runs at https://smtp.yativo.com/api/v1.

Authenticate every request with the X-Api-Key and X-Api-Secret headers. Each key only works from the server IPs listed on it. These keys replaced bearer tokens, as covered in our October update. Every POST also needs a unique Idempotency-Key header.

Step 1. Generate a USDC deposit address on Solana to fund your balance:

POST https://api.yativo.com/api/v1/crypto/create-wallet
X-Api-Key: $YATIVO_API_KEY
X-Api-Secret: $YATIVO_API_SECRET
Idempotency-Key: 6f88394c-48ea-5c42-b040-aaab2c63f8a2
Content-Type: application/json

{
  "currency": "USDC_SOL"
}

Step 2. List the payout methods available for Panama:

curl "https://api.yativo.com/api/v1/payment-methods/payout?country=PAN" \
  -H "X-Api-Key: $YATIVO_API_KEY" \
  -H "X-Api-Secret: $YATIVO_API_SECRET" \
  -H "Accept: application/json"

In this example, Bank Transfer carries gateway ID 500. Always read the ID from the live response instead of hardcoding it.

Step 3. Fetch the required fields for that gateway:

GET https://api.yativo.com/api/v1/beneficiary/form/show/500
X-Api-Key: $YATIVO_API_KEY
X-Api-Secret: $YATIVO_API_SECRET

The response lists every required field and its accepted values. Build your payment_data object from it. For field details, see API documentation.

Step 4. Create the beneficiary. Replace the placeholder with the fields the form returned:

POST https://api.yativo.com/api/v1/beneficiaries/payment-methods/
X-Api-Key: $YATIVO_API_KEY
X-Api-Secret: $YATIVO_API_SECRET
Idempotency-Key: b33d5055-2a24-5673-9c79-133f38480933
Content-Type: application/json

{
  "gateway_id": 500,
  "nickname": "Panama City logistics firm",
  "currency": "USD",
  "customer_id": "e8caa491-57b6-4c39-9e3a-d2c97e47fbf0",
  "payment_data": {
    "{field_from_form}": "{value}"
  }
}

Step 5. Request a quote. USDC to USD is 1:1, and the quote shows fees and the final amount. Quotes hold for 5 minutes:

POST https://api.yativo.com/api/v1/exchange-rate
X-Api-Key: $YATIVO_API_KEY
X-Api-Secret: $YATIVO_API_SECRET
Idempotency-Key: 6035a329-e097-5cbc-82b7-bd9630acdcdd
Content-Type: application/json

{
  "from_currency": "USD",
  "to_currency": "USD",
  "method_id": 500,
  "method_type": "payout",
  "amount": 500
}

Step 6. Initiate the payout from your balance:

POST https://api.yativo.com/api/v1/wallet/payout
X-Api-Key: $YATIVO_API_KEY
X-Api-Secret: $YATIVO_API_SECRET
Idempotency-Key: 170bc12d-6ebb-5b1c-b194-9a2926644dfd
Content-Type: application/json

{
  "debit_wallet": "USD",
  "amount": 500,
  "payment_method_id": 48332,
  "customer_id": "e8caa491-57b6-4c39-9e3a-d2c97e47fbf0",
  "quote_id": "4a72ecf8-6c8a-4e38-9971-8aabe9f785ed"
}

Use the id from the beneficiary response as payment_method_id. For bulk runs, repeat the call per beneficiary, as described on our payouts page.
