How to Pay Contractors and Freelancers in the Netherlands with Stablecoins

How to Pay Contractors and Freelancers in the Netherlands with Stablecoins

Paying freelancers across borders should not feel like a different job from paying your own staff. If you need to pay contractors Netherlands based, the practical question is simple. How does the money reach a Dutch bank account quickly, in euros, with a record you can reconcile? This guide answers that for finance and product teams.

The Netherlands is a euro-area market. The country received about US$4.7 billion in personal remittances in 2024, according to World Bank data.

Stablecoins give you a settlement layer that moves value in dollars or euros, and Yativo pairs it with local payout partners. Your contractor receives a normal local credit, and the recipient never needs a crypto wallet.

Why Companies Work with Contractors and Freelancers in the Netherlands

Euro payout demand across the region is large and steady. France alone received about US$40.4 billion in personal remittances in 2025.

For your finance team, the challenge is not finding contractors. It is paying them on time, in the right currency, without building a payments function just for freelancers. That is the gap a stablecoin settlement layer with local payout partners is designed to close. For a wider view of the corridor, see our guide to stablecoin payouts to the Netherlands.

What Contractors in the Netherlands Expect from a Payment

Payouts to the Netherlands are made in euros to a Dutch or euro-area bank account. Instant payments are now normal in the euro area. Your payout design should account for both the currency and the speed.

Bank SEPA (NL)

This rail pays in EUR to a local bank account, and Yativo settles it in under 30 minutes on gateway ID 1229. Catalog limits for Bank SEPA gateways are EUR 10 to 15,000 per payout, so larger invoices need to be split or routed differently.

POBO (Local) (EUR)

POBO (Local) (EUR) is a local euro gateway that requires a POBO endorsement on the account. This rail settles at T+1, the next business day, on gateway ID 1093.

SWIFT (POBO) (EUR)

SWIFT (POBO) (EUR) is a euro gateway on the SWIFT network. It settles at T+1, the next business day, on gateway ID 1153. The same POBO endorsement requirement applies.

SWIFT (USD)

This rail pays in USD and settles at T+1, the next business day, on gateway ID 679.

What speed looks like on the ground

Instant Credit Transfers already made up 30.7% of SCT volume in Q3 2025, with nearly 2,800 scheme participants. Euro-area payment service providers had to receive SCT Inst by January 2025 and send by October 2025.

SEPA Instant is the same scheme family, with near-real-time credits when both ends support it. For a deeper walkthrough of the rail, read SEPA payouts explained.

The Challenges When You Pay Contractors in the Netherlands from Abroad

Cross-border costs add up on small invoices. Sending small amounts across borders costs an average of 6.36% of the amount sent, according to the World Bank. Freelancer invoices are often small and frequent, so that percentage bites harder than it would on a large supplier payment.

Cross-border routes can slow everything down. A traditional international wire may take longer than a local rail. Plan for that when you set payment dates.

Currency mismatch creates disputes. If the invoice currency and the payout currency differ, the amount that lands may not match the amount invoiced. Agreeing the payout currency up front removes most of that friction.

Reconciliation gets messy at scale. Many contractors paid by wire means many references, arrival dates and possible exceptions. Without a consistent reference format and a single record of quotes and payouts, month-end close becomes a manual exercise. Yativo quotes each payout before you confirm, so you have a record to match to an invoice.

How to Pay Contractors in the Netherlands with Stablecoins on Yativo

Yativo uses stablecoins as the settlement layer and local partners as the last mile. You fund a balance, request a quote, confirm, and a licensed local payout partner pays the contractor locally. The contractor sees a normal local credit.

  1. Fund your float balance. Deposit USDC or fiat into your Yativo balance. EURC deposits credit your EUR balance, and EURC is a euro-backed stablecoin issued by Circle, the same issuer as USDC.
  2. Add the contractor’s payout details. Capture the contractor’s payout details and the agreed payout currency. Save these once and reuse them on every run.
  3. Request a quote. Request a quote before confirming the payout. A EUR payout funded with EURC quotes from EUR and debits your EUR wallet, so no USD conversion is involved.
  4. Confirm the payout. Once confirmed, a licensed local payout partner pays the contractor locally. For the rail-level detail, see the Netherlands SEPA payouts.

Yativo has active gateways for the Netherlands covering local SEPA, POBO and SWIFT settlement in EUR and USD. Choose the rail that matches the invoice currency.

GatewayIDSettlement

POBO (Local) (EUR)1093T+1 (next business day)
SWIFT (POBO), EUR1153T+1 (next business day)
SWIFT (USD)679T+1 (next business day)

These are the active gateways in Yativo’s catalog today. Always read the live list from the payout-methods endpoint before you route a payment.

Any gateway with POBO in its name requires a POBO endorsement on your account.

EURC deposits credit your EUR balance. A EUR payout funded with EURC quotes from EUR and debits your EUR wallet, so no USD conversion is involved.

Your recipient does not need a crypto wallet. They never see or touch stablecoins. On their side, the payment looks like a normal local transfer.

How to Send Stablecoin Payouts to the Netherlands with Yativo

Option 1: Dashboard (for manual payouts)

  1. Fund your Yativo float balance with either a fiat or a stablecoin deposit, such as USDC.
  2. Go to Transfer in your Yativo dashboard.
  3. Select the float wallet you are paying with, for example USD, EUR, MXN or whichever balance you funded.
  4. Choose the customer you are paying on behalf of. This step is necessary for fintechs that run payouts on behalf of their customers.
  5. Choose the Netherlands as the destination and Bank SEPA (NL) as the payout method.
  6. Enter the recipient details the payout form asks for, such as the holder’s name, IBAN and BIC.
  7. Enter the amount in USD or EUR.
  8. Review the quote: exchange rate, fees, delivery time and the exact EUR amount your recipient receives.
  9. Confirm with your PIN and 2FA.
  10. Track the payout in real time and download the receipt for your records.

Option 2: API (for automated and bulk payouts)

Every endpoint below is in the Yativo API documentation. Production calls go to https://api.yativo.com/api/v1, and the sandbox runs at https://smtp.yativo.com/api/v1.

Authenticate every request with the X-Api-Key and X-Api-Secret headers. Each key only works from the server IPs listed on it. These keys replaced bearer tokens, as covered in our October update. Every POST also needs a unique Idempotency-Key header.

Step 1. Generate an EURC deposit address on Solana to fund your EUR balance (USDC_SOL also works):

POST https://api.yativo.com/api/v1/crypto/create-wallet
X-Api-Key: $YATIVO_API_KEY
X-Api-Secret: $YATIVO_API_SECRET
Idempotency-Key: 9c8c326a-ad1c-5c3f-b0b6-4b2c179c73bd
Content-Type: application/json

{
  "currency": "EURC_SOL"
}

Step 2. List the payout methods available for the Netherlands:

curl "https://api.yativo.com/api/v1/payment-methods/payout?country=NLD" \
  -H "X-Api-Key: $YATIVO_API_KEY" \
  -H "X-Api-Secret: $YATIVO_API_SECRET" \
  -H "Accept: application/json"

In this example, Bank SEPA (NL) carries gateway ID 1229. Always read the ID from the live response instead of hardcoding it.

Step 3. Fetch the required fields for that gateway:

GET https://api.yativo.com/api/v1/beneficiary/form/show/1229
X-Api-Key: $YATIVO_API_KEY
X-Api-Secret: $YATIVO_API_SECRET

The response lists every required field and its accepted values. Build your payment_data object from it. For field details, see API documentation.

Step 4. Create the beneficiary. Replace the placeholder with the fields the form returned:

POST https://api.yativo.com/api/v1/beneficiaries/payment-methods/
X-Api-Key: $YATIVO_API_KEY
X-Api-Secret: $YATIVO_API_SECRET
Idempotency-Key: 9a12ad48-7a66-5edd-b73a-67a98652b00a
Content-Type: application/json

{
  "gateway_id": 1229,
  "nickname": "Amsterdam e-commerce brand",
  "currency": "EUR",
  "customer_id": "e8caa491-57b6-4c39-9e3a-d2c97e47fbf0",
  "payment_data": {
    "{field_from_form}": "{value}"
  }
}

Step 5. Request a quote for the EUR payout. Quotes hold for 5 minutes:

POST https://api.yativo.com/api/v1/exchange-rate
X-Api-Key: $YATIVO_API_KEY
X-Api-Secret: $YATIVO_API_SECRET
Idempotency-Key: 39e96d08-98a2-5cb4-9d37-6529a6bbb91f
Content-Type: application/json

{
  "from_currency": "EUR",
  "to_currency": "EUR",
  "method_id": 1229,
  "method_type": "payout",
  "amount": 1000
}

Step 6. Initiate the payout from your EUR balance:

POST https://api.yativo.com/api/v1/wallet/payout
X-Api-Key: $YATIVO_API_KEY
X-Api-Secret: $YATIVO_API_SECRET
Idempotency-Key: 9a655edc-b692-59ab-a30f-da6a3a419087
Content-Type: application/json

{
  "debit_wallet": "EUR",
  "amount": 1000,
  "payment_method_id": 48350,
  "customer_id": "e8caa491-57b6-4c39-9e3a-d2c97e47fbf0",
  "quote_id": "4a72ecf8-6c8a-4e38-9971-8aabe9f785ed"
}

Use the id from the beneficiary response as payment_method_id. For bulk runs, repeat the call per beneficiary, as described on our payouts page.

Best Practices for Paying Contractors in the Netherlands

Collect identifiers at onboarding. Get the contractor’s payout details and the agreed payout currency before the first invoice arrives. Store them in one place and require a second review before any change.

Agree the payout currency in the contract. State whether the contractor is paid in EUR or USD. A one-line clause makes the quote step predictable.

Batch on a fixed schedule. Group invoices into a weekly or twice-monthly run instead of paying each one on arrival. Batching reduces the number of quotes, confirmations and reconciliation lines.

Quote before confirming. Always review the quote before you commit the payout. The quote is your record of what the contractor will receive and what leaves your balance.

Keep reconciliation records. Store the quote, the rail used, the gateway reference and the invoice number together. Keeping the link between the stablecoin movement and the local credit makes reconciliation easier, and clean records help with month-end close.

Classification and tax duties stay with you. How a contractor is classified, and what you owe in tax, is a question for your company and its advisors. Yativo moves money and provides payment records. It does not decide employment status or tax treatment, and this article is not legal or tax advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

How fast does a euro payout to a Dutch contractor arrive?

On the Bank SEPA (NL) gateway, settlement is under 30 minutes. POBO (Local) (EUR) and SWIFT (POBO) (EUR) settle at T+1, the next business day.

What is the maximum size of a single Bank SEPA payout?

Bank SEPA gateways pay EUR 10 to 15,000 per payout. Larger invoices can be split across payouts.

Do I need a POBO endorsement to use the POBO gateways?

Yes. Any gateway with POBO in its name requires a POBO endorsement on the account. That covers POBO (Local) (EUR) and SWIFT (POBO) (EUR).

Can I pay a Dutch contractor in US dollars instead of euros?

Yes. The SWIFT (USD) gateway pays in USD and settles at T+1, the next business day. Agree the currency in the contract so the invoice and the payout match.

Does my recipient need a crypto wallet?

No. Your recipient gets a normal local credit in their usual account or wallet. They never touch stablecoins, and the payment looks like any other domestic transfer.

Is paying out this way legal and compliant?

Yes, when it runs through regulated infrastructure. Yativo is registered with FinCEN as a Money Services Business, registration number 31000270723339. A licensed local payout partner handles the local leg. Your own tax and reporting duties still apply, so confirm them with your advisor.

How long does a quote last?

Quotes from the exchange-rate endpoint hold for 5 minutes. You see the rate, the fees and the exact amount your recipient gets before you confirm.
